How it started
When the COVID pandemic hit in March 2020 our jobs in the hospitality industry shut down overnight. Finding ourselves at home for long periods with our two young daughters, we created our own fortnightly shopping ritual, buying all our favourite store cupboard goods that we could make nutritious family meals from; most notably the canned fish we all loved to eat. But as much as we loved it, we also knew that none of this fish was canned in England or used any of the delicious British fish we knew was so readily available.
So began our dream of preserving and canning British fish, right here in the UK. Sea Sisters, named after our two little girls, was born. Together we learned a craft from scratch, testing, experimenting and researching from our tiny kitchen in Hackney. We launched our range from a micro-cannery in Hackney where we proved the concept could work. After lockdown we moved to Bridport in West Dorset, where we opened our craft cannery with the values of sustainability, flavour and championing the British fishing industry at the heart of our mission. Our first conservas, Cornish Pollack with Garlic and Bay, Mussels in Cider Vinegar and Mussels with Nduja were launched in 2021.
How it's going
Today we are proud to say that Sea Sisters employs fifteen people here at our craft cannery in the beautiful West Dorset countryside. We produce a vivid and delicious range of British fish and seafood, always determined by its seasonality, flavour and the sustainability of the fisheries we work with. Every can we produce is preserved to our hand-crafted recipes, packed and wrapped individually and labelled in our distinctive and recyclable packaging.
We’re stocked in over 300 independent delis and larger retailers. Our cans are sold in wine-bars and craft breweries as British Conservas, to be enjoyed with a beer and some good quality snacks in the early evening. We’ve been on ITV’s This Morning, Prue Leith’s Cotswolds Kitchen, the BBC’s Escape to the Country and featured in an array national newspapers and magazines.
But most importantly, we’ve grown a dedicated and loyal following of fellow fish- and seafood-lovers from around the world who like us, are thrilled to finally be able to enjoy the wonderful flavours of canned British fish and seafood at home.
Meet our chef, Angus
Angus started his career in food as a chef in some of London's best-loved restaurants, including Trullo and Rochelle Canteen, where his cooking ethos of simple, flavoursome, ingredient-led food was first honed. He creates all our British Conservas recipes from scratch, sourcing and testing ingredients to deliver the flavours and combinations our customers love. He also heads up the cannery team, overseeing every aspect of production to ensure our cans reach you in perfect condition every time.
